LED Downlights: Cost & Benefits in NZ

LED downlights are one of the most popular home electrical upgrades — they look great, last for years and cut your lighting bill. Here's what to budget and what to know.

What LED downlights cost to install

As a guide, installed LED downlights in NZ run roughly $80–$150 per fitting when several are done together, depending on ceiling access, whether it's a new install or a swap, and the quality of the fitting. Replacing old halogen downlights with LEDs is usually quicker (and safer — old halogens run very hot).

The benefits

  • Much lower running cost — LEDs use a fraction of the power of halogens
  • Long life — often 15,000+ hours, so far fewer bulb changes
  • Less heat — halogen downlights are a known fire risk in ceilings
  • Dimmable and available in warm or cool white

Worth knowing before you upgrade

If you're replacing old halogens, an electrician will check the existing transformers and ceiling insulation clearances (old fittings sometimes can't have insulation over them; many modern LEDs are IC-rated and can). We'll recommend quality fittings that won't flicker or fail early.

How we can help

FAQ

Quick answers

Are LED downlights cheaper to run?

Yes — significantly. They use a fraction of the power of halogen downlights, so a whole-house swap usually pays for itself over time.

Can I put insulation over LED downlights?

Only if they're IC-rated (insulation-contact). Many modern LEDs are; old halogens are not. We'll fit IC-rated where needed.
