How Much Does It Cost to Rewire a House in NZ?

Rewiring is one of those jobs people put off because they have no idea what it costs. Here's an honest, plain-English guide to NZ rewire pricing, what drives it up or down, and how to tell if you actually need one.

What a full house rewire costs

As a rough guide, a full rewire of a typical 3-bedroom NZ home lands somewhere around $12,000–$25,000+, depending on size, access and finish. Smaller homes or partial rewires cost less; large or two-storey homes with difficult access cost more. It sounds like a lot, but a rewire is a once-in-50-years job that removes a real fire and shock risk.

The only way to get a real number is an on-site quote — every house is different. We'll always give you a clear, itemised price before any work starts.

What drives the price up or down

  • House size & number of circuits — more rooms, more wiring
  • Access — easy ceiling/subfloor access is cheaper than chasing walls
  • Single vs two-storey — upstairs runs add labour
  • Switchboard upgrade — older boards usually need replacing too
  • Extras — new lights, extra power points, data and EV provisioning

Signs your home may need rewiring

  • Cloth-covered or black rubber wiring (common in pre-1970s homes)
  • A switchboard with ceramic fuses and no RCDs
  • Frequent tripping, flickering lights or warm switches
  • Not enough power points, so everything runs off multi-boards
  • A burning smell or scorch marks — call us straight away

Do you have to rewire the whole house?

Not always. Sometimes a partial rewire (problem circuits plus a switchboard upgrade) is enough, and we can stage the work to spread the cost. We'll give you an honest assessment — full rewire, partial, or just a switchboard upgrade — rather than selling you the biggest job.
