As a guide, a typical home switchboard upgrade in NZ runs around $1,500–$3,500, depending on the number of circuits, whether the board needs relocating, and the state of the existing wiring. Adding RCDs to every circuit and tidying the board is usually included in a proper upgrade.
Older boards with rewireable ceramic fuses offer no protection against electric shock. A modern board uses circuit breakers and RCDs (safety switches) that cut power in a fraction of a second if they detect a fault — protecting your family. It also handles the demands of a modern household far better than a 1960s board.
Most upgrades are a one-day job. We replace the board with a modern enclosure, fit breakers and RCDs, test every circuit and label it clearly. There's a short planned power-off period we arrange with you, and we size the new board with spare capacity for whatever you add next.
