Any electrician doing prescribed electrical work in NZ must be registered with the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) and hold a current practising licence. It's fair to ask — a good sparky won't mind showing it. Unregistered “mates' rates” work isn't legal and voids your insurance if something goes wrong.
Check Google reviews for recent, specific feedback — communication, tidiness, turning up on time. A handful of detailed 5-star reviews beats a vague claim of “20 years' experience.” Watch for patterns, good or bad.
For anything beyond a quick fix, get a written quote so you know the basis of the price. Be wary of a number scribbled on the back of a hand — and of anyone who won't put it in writing.
Proper electrical work comes with a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) where required. It's your proof the work meets standard — important for safety, insurance and selling the house later.
FAQ
Ask for their EWRB registration/licence — you can also look them up on the EWRB public register. A reputable electrician is happy to provide it.
For anything beyond a small repair, yes — a written quote sets the price basis and protects both sides.
A CoC certifies the electrical work was done to NZ standards. You should receive one for prescribed work — keep it for insurance and resale.
