A heat pump install is two trades working together: the refrigeration technician mounts the indoor head and outdoor unit and runs the pipework, and the electrician handles the power side. That electrical work is what makes it safe and compliant — and it's a step plenty of cheap quotes skim over.
The electrician's job is to run a dedicated circuit from your switchboard to the unit, fit the right breaker and isolating switch, confirm your board has the spare capacity, and certify the connection. For a single high-wall heat pump it's straightforward; for a multi-room ducted system it's a bigger electrical job.
As a guide, a supplied-and-installed single high-wall heat pump in NZ runs roughly $2,500–$4,500 in 2026, and a ducted whole-home system $10,000–$20,000+. The electrical portion is a slice of that — but if your switchboard needs upgrading to take the new circuit, budget another $1,500–$3,500 on top. Every home is different, so we quote on site.
This is where a lot of people get caught out. The central North Island sees frosts and single-digit days through winter, so an underpowered heat pump runs flat-out and never quite warms the room. A unit sized for the room volume, ceiling height and insulation will heat comfortably and run cheaper. We'll make sure the electrical supply matches the unit you actually need — not the smallest one that fits the budget.
FAQ
Yes — a heat pump should run on its own dedicated, protected circuit from the switchboard rather than sharing with other loads. Your electrician runs and certifies this.
Often yes, but older Taupō boards with ceramic fuses or no spare ways may need upgrading first. We check capacity before quoting so there are no surprises.
Yes — the electrical connection is completed by an EWRB-registered electrician to current NZ standards, with a Certificate of Compliance where required.
